"You're socks are too short!" Cyclocross is known for its spectators and heckles. When I started racing cyclocross, tall socks were the thing (still are). And I have a box full of tall socks decorated with everything from argyle to a Wonder Woman cape. When I started racing among the elites, I clung to my tall socks like mud to a cross bike. Until, someone pointed out to me that the rules read "socks shouldn't extend past the mid-calf." Really? Since then, I have abided by the rules, but I feel like yelling out over the din of cowbell, "You're socks are too short!"
NOW, I am headed to the holy ground of cyclocross, Belgium, at Christmas to race. It's expensive, but worth it to test my skills on the fabled cross courses of Europe. Buy a shirt, wear it proudly, wear tall socks for me, support my trip. Maybe a heckler will call out in Dutch as I ride past, "Je sokken zijn te kort!"
