People Helping Paws (PHP) is a foster-based animal rescue and pet food pantry located in Jefferson City. PHP's work reduces the number of domesticated animals euthanized at animal shelters. Using volunteer foster homes, PHP removes hard-to-place domesticated animals (bully breeds, boxers, or those with expensive medical needs) from shelters across the state creating available space for stray and surrendered animals and reducing the number of animals euthanized solely due to space constraints. The latter service provides those animals with extended time to heal and to find an available home capable of caring for it. All animals passing through PHP receive full vet services including immunizations and spay/neuter to further reduce the pet overpopulation in this community. So far in 2016, PHP has assisted 58 dogs through foster placement. While many have been adopted, the adoption fee does not fully cover the cost of vetting.   This year we have incurred over $14,000 in medical bills. Through the generosity of supporters and the adoption fees, PHP has paid all but $2,050 of that bill. This fundraiser will help PHP to kill that bill. These dogs include:-Tess, an 8 year old cocker spaniel tossed from a car. Tess' eyes were painfully ulcerated & bulging. She was so flea infested that she had lost her hair. Tess also had 8 rotting teeth that caused pain and danger of heart infection. She was located in an area that does not allow adoptions from the shelters, rescue was her only hope.  PHP stepped in, placed her in foster care and treated all her medical conditions.  Today, Tess looks like a puppy again & is enjoying a pain-free life.  She has a pending adoption.  - Jewel, a 1 year old pit bull found wandering the streets, pregnant. Jewel gave birth to 7 puppies in the shelter. This shelter does not allow adoptions. Newborn puppies cannot survive in a shelter. PHP stepped in and moved the family into a foster home. All but 1 puppy survived and have been adopted.  Jewel is still looking for her forever home. -Diana, a 2 year old American Bulldog living next to a busy highway with ten 5 week old puppies.  PHP stepped in and placed all in foster homes. Unfortunately we discovered that on top of being starved herself and trying to feed her puppies she was also heartworm positive.  All her puppies have been adopted to great homes and as soon as Diana is giving a clean bill of health she will be looking for her forever home.  -Roadie, a 2 year old lab mix that needed his front leg amputated due to being dragged behind a vehicle then left for dead.  He was sitting in a kill shelter needing surgery.  He was also heartworm positive.  Roadie is now healthy happy and very active as a tripod.  He is looking for his forever home.  -Cooper, a 3 yr old Great Dane/Boxer shot 6 times in the leg and shoulder by an officer because he was thought to be a pit bull.  Cooper lived in a town that has BSL.  For his safety, Cooper was surrendered to us and taken out of the area.  Cooper has healed nicely and is a very loving dog.  He is looking for his forever home.  PHP has several dogs available for adoption.  These are just a few in our program.
