Learn More About Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Below we'll explain some of the most important things about Breast Cancer Awareness Month and how you can can get involved on your own.
Who started Breast Cancer Awareness Month?
National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM for short) was started in 1985 by the American Cancer Society.
The American Cancer Society partnered with a pharmaceutical company for the initiative. That pharmaceutical company, Imperial Chemical Industries, was later absorbed by AstraZeneca, which currently manufactures a wide range of anti-breast cancer drugs.
In 1993, a few years after the inaugural NBCAM, Estee Lauder Vice President Evelyn Lauder founded The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. That foundation created the iconic “pink ribbon” which many people associate with breast cancer awareness.
What is the goal of NBCAM?
The official goal of NBCAM is to raise awareness of breast cancer while also teaching women that mammograms are the best defense against the disease.
1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Although there is no known cure for breast cancer, an early diagnosis significantly increases the chances of survival.
Secondary goals of the initiative include raising money in support of free mammograms across the United States. Since many women cannot afford health care or mammograms across the country, they’re left under protected against the disease.
That’s why the National Breast Cancer Foundation aims to provide free mammograms to women in need across all 50 states. Their donation page promises that $100 buys one mammogram for a woman in need.
How much money is raised during NBCAM?
Throughout the year, breast cancer awareness charities raise an estimated $6 to $7 billion. A large portion of that money is raised during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Some of this money goes towards fostering awareness, while other money funds research initiatives.
Larger charities, including Susan G. Komen for the Cure, gross approximately $420 million each year, while the National Institutes of Health allocates approximately $760 million each year to breast cancer research.
Creative ways to raise awareness throughout October
Breast cancer awareness campaigns have grown larger and more popular every year. This October should be no exception. Here are a few creative ways in which people have raised awareness for breast cancer in previous years:
Pink comic strips: On one day in October, comic strip artists across the country use pink in their cartoons.
NFL players: The NFL has played a huge role in breast cancer awareness over the past few years. In past Octobers, NFL players have been seen wearing pink gear on and off the field, while pink is displayed prominently throughout football stadiums.
Pink hijab day: A group of Muslim women in Missouri decided to take a stand against breast cancer and negative Muslim stereotypes by launching “Pink Hijab Day”. The annual event has spread across America and the world.
Sell custom t-shirts: Many people, runners, and teams create custom breast cancer awareness t-shirts to help raise money for awareness. You can start a shirt design (or upload any of the designs in this post) by going to our online t-shirt design tool.
